about

I was hired under contract to design the assets required for Western’s 2020 Art Studio BFA show. Included was a 67 page catalog, artist statement plaques, individual artwork labels, and promotional signage such as a vinyl banner and poster. To maintain order in the exchange of various assets, I created a Google Drive folder so each individual member of the cohort could upload photos of their artwork and written statements. We would meet on Zoom bi-weekly to go over revisions and so they could provide me feedback on my designs.

Before I made any commitments to the catalog, I went through a couple of potential identities with the cohort. They gravitated towards the second.

process

Due to the range of voices coming from the students, I wanted to create a language that would help blend all of their voices into one. I did so by creating an abstraction of each artist’s work in a process of blurring and texturizing, which marked every new section in a way that was unique to each individual.

reflection

Right around the time I was signing the work contract, the pandemic hit. This complicated things tremendously. During much of the design process, I and the BFA cohort wondered if the show would even take place. The show got pushed back a month, and then two, which eventually became three. Unfortunately, a portion of the show I had envisioned didn’t come to fruition. This included some of the above mockups like the banner and the wall signage. Despite the setbacks, I was happy with how the catalog turned out, and thankful that I had anything to show from the process.
